The popularity of the volleyball game plays a key role in cementing friendships among Sneham members, young and old. The weekly game, played on Saturday mornings at Lettuce Lake Park, attracts about a dozen players every week, on a regular basis, out of a roster of twenty five who have signed up with “SportsSneham”, the sports arm of Tamil Sneham. Our presence at the court can be evident to anyone who visits the park at that hour (8 to 10 AM) by the loud laughter and uproar made by the excited players. In short, the game is a lot of fun, provides a welcome respite from the daily grind and, as a side-benefit, the much-needed exercise for many of us.

The unique nature of Sneham’s volleyball is the fact that you do not need to be an accomplished player to be admitted to the playground. In fact, if you are like me, you just have to have the stamina to stand up and shove the ball away from you, preferably over the net to the opponent’s side, without cracking your finger bones. More important, you need to enjoy, or pretend to enjoy, the jokes and antics of some players who are good at entertaining you with their wit than playing serious game. This weekly diversion has engendered a sense of belonging to all of us and forged new friendships that extend beyond the court. The players and their families frequently get together on family events and trade stories and jokes about the game. Occasionally, families of players bring hot breakfast (like idly) and serve the surprised players after the game!

On a serious note, we are proud of the caliber of our players whose team, “Sneham Sivaji”, won the “Sneham’s Independence Cup 2007” volleyball tournament participated by six local teams, two from the local Telugu community and one from the USF. This has helped us enlarge our circle of friends and forge new relationships with those who share our mission. After all, is this not Sneham all about?

Cricket and Chess tournaments will be conducted shortly.
